Whenever a significant prize-giving event approaches, one notices a demand for the addition of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything that year
- Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles worldwide and have been for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
