Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these drugs need to be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you become ravenous," said an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle management.
