Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
